A Robot to Shoot Panoramas? My Monkey Can Do That

Gigapan Robot to Shoot Panoramas

Carnegie Mellon University and NASA’s Ames Intelligent Robot Group have developed a $200 robot that can take panoramic shots on its own, using an ordinary digital camera. They call it the Gigapan.

It escapes me at the moment why you would need a freakin’ robot to do that when it’s actually quite easy to shoot panoramas with what is available now: a steady hand (or a tripod) and a stitch software.

But coming from Carnegie and NASA, there’s got to be something there. Maybe it’s the automation feature. Maybe it’s their software.

Or maybe they just want to boast that the Gigapan idea came from the Mars rovers.

My monkey can shoot panoramas.
