2007 Pulitzer Prize Winners Announced

The Pulitzer Board has announced the 2007 Pulitzer Prize Winners, top-billed by gold medalist The Wall Street Journal for public service.

In photography, Renée C. Byer of The Sacramento Bee was awarded the Feature Photography Pulitzer for “A Mother’s Journey,” which the Pulitzer board called an “intimate portrayal of a single mother and her young son as he loses his battle with cancer.”

Oded Balilty of the Associated Press won the Pulitzer Breaking News Photography award. His citation reads, “Awarded to Oded Balilty of The Associated Press for his powerful photograph of a lone Jewish woman defying Israeli security forces as they remove illegal settlers in the West Bank.”

Other winners in the Journalism category were: Brett Blackledge of The Birmingham (Ala.) News, Kenneth R. Weiss, Usha Lee McFarling and Rick Loomis of the Los Angeles Times, Debbie Cenziper of The Miami Herald, Charlie Savage of The Boston Globe, The Wall Street Journal Staff, Andrea Elliott of The New York Times, Cynthia Tucker of The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, Jonathan Gold of LA Weekly, Editorial Board of the New York Daily News and Walt Handelsman of Newsday, Long Island, NY

The winning journalists pocketed $10,000 each along with their Pulitzers.

Seven Pulitzer Prizes were also awarded in the field of Letters, Drama and Music. A special citation went to Ray Bradbury for his prolific and influential career in science fiction and fantasy, while a posthumous citation was awarded to John Coltrane for his masterful jazz musicianship.
