2006 Pulitzer Prize Winners in Photography

This year’s Pulitzer Prize winners were announced in late July, and the prize for Breaking News Photography went to the staff at the Dallas Morning News for its series of photographs of the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. The other finalists included Carolyn Cole and Brian Vander Brug of the Los Angeles Times for their work documenting Israel’s withdrawl from Gaza and Eric Gay of the AP who, like the Dallas Morning News team, covered the pain and suffering wrought by last fall’s hurricane.

Receiving the award for Feature Photography was Todd Heisler of the Rocky Mountain News. His behind the scenes photography of funerals for Colorado Marines returning home from Iraq in caskets were haunting and controversial. Mike Stocker of the South Florida Sun-Sentinel and Damon Winter of the Los Angeles Times were the other finalists in this category.
